Periodontitis is a disease of a bacterial nature that affects the gums and supporting tissues of the tooth.\n\nPeriodontal disease can present in several forms. It begins with the deposition of bacterial plaque, an opaque film that hardens, eventually forming tartar. Tartar deposits keep bacteria that infect the gums. In the early stages, this is called gingivitis, characterized by red, inflamed gums that bleed when brushing your teeth. Untreated, gingivitis progresses into periodontitis, a much more serious form of the disease, in which periodontal pockets are formed, separating the teeth from the gums and bone.
