Gingiveectomy is the surgical removal of gum tissue. The procedure was originally developed to treat periodontal disease, today it is used especially for cosmetic interventions. Reducing pathological gingival pockets, the spaces between the teeth, is an effective method of treating periodontal disease. Frequently patients suffering from this disease experience loss of gum tissue around their teeth leaving empty spaces behind the gums. These spaces are called pockets. If the gingival pockets become too deep to be cleaned with the toothbrush, they are classified as pathological.
